L’Écosse dispose d’un climat bien typique et qui ne ressemble sans doute à aucun autre pays.
En effet, en une même journée on peut passer de la pluie, au soleil, à la neige…,  et ce en l’espace de quelques heures seulement…  
Edimbourg n’échappe pas à cette règle.  Ce que je trouve absolument fascinant et plein de charmes c’est lorsqu’il fait tout gris et que le brouillard  "enveloppe" les toits de la ville.

Crochet
I knew for long that handmade crafts (cards, sewing, baking,…) are quite popular over here and in Great Britain in general.  In my search for paper crafters in Edinburgh I came across a lot of sewing, knitting and crochet groups.  As I like learning new things and challenges I decided to give it a go to crochet  (I can sew and I had a brief experience with knitting in my youth).  When I was on wwoofing, my host Margaret went to a crochet course and I was amazed by what she achieved after one lesson.  What I enjoy about crochet is that you can quickly see the result of your work. So I looked up for a basic course (where I could also learn how to crochet a “basic” flower) and came across http://www.k1yarns.co.uk/  .  K1 Yarns is a knitting shop in the Grassmarket/Cowgate area. The shop is absolutely lovely with a great choice of yarns (in every texture and colour you can imagine) and other fabrics such as Harris Tweed (handwoven cloth from the Outer Hebrides/Western isles).  There’s no pressure to make you buy; you can just look around. You’re very welcome to ask all the questions you like, the professional staff has the perfect answer for you. Or you can just relax in one of the comfy chairs and why not knit away! The aim of the course was to make a tea cosy.I wanted to make something I could use (I don’t have a tea pot!) so I decided to make fingerless mittens.

Film
Ik ben naar de cinema geweest  om  te ontsnappen aan het regen maar ook omdat ik deze film wou zien: Moonrise Kingdom.  Dit is de laatste film van regisseur Wes Anderson (The Royal Tenenbaums, The Darjeeling Limited, Fantastic Mr Fox)  met o.a Bruce Willis, Edward Norton, Bill Murray, Frances McDormand, Tilda Swinton...
De film speelt zich in de jaren ‘60 (met de leuke outfits en kapsels van die tijd) op een eiland voor de kust van Nieuw Engeland (VS). De film draait rond het liefdesverhaal tussen een jongen en een meisje, hoe ze samen van thuis lopen, hoe het hele dorp in rep en roer raakt en alle waanzinnige avonturen die ervan afleiden. Het is een film volle waanzin (in de positieve zin natuurlijk) en schattige karakters. Ik heb er echt van genoten. Klik hier om de trailer te bekijken.

Weekend: belgian beers & Moonwalk

Quelques mots sur mon super week-end que je pourrais résumer comme suit: nuit blanche - ambiance - chaleur humaine - nouvelles rencontres...   mais je me dois de développer pour éviter les mauvaises interprétations :-)
* Vendredi soir sortie avec mes colocs. 1er arrêt au Brauhaus (bar super sympa avec un choix de bières internationales incroyable); j'ai fait découvrir la gueuze lambiek (une bière de ma région) à mes colocs et ils ont adoré. Stephen nous a payé un whisky de 18 ans d'âge --> explosion de saveur ambrée dans la gorge et un peu aussi dans le cerveau (du pur bonheur). Ensuite une Franziskaner et pour finir une mort subite framboise. Ensuite direction vers le Lebowski's (un autre pub) avant sa fermeture (1h - et oui il y a une limitation par ici) et là Prisca nous fait découvrir le Big Lebowskis (2 doses de vodka, 2 doses de Kalhua (liqueur à base de café), du chocolat et de la crème fraîche)-on dirait un milkshake- dans une verre d'1/2 l.  On s'est fait ejecté à 1h. 
Au total on n'a pas beaucoup bu (niveau quantité) mais les combinaisons étaient assez fortes --> résultat des courses: on était un peu éméché. Mais ça valait le coup. Je me suis couchée vers 3h et levée à 8h. J'ai pris un petit déj (porridge) et direction Jardins de Princes Street où je me suis couchée dans l'herbe avec un bouquin sous le soleil (et oui il y a du soleil en Écosse). Je suis rentrée en fin d'après-midi et j'ai lézardé dans le flat avec les colocs en attendant de partir pour le Moonwalk.


* Night from saturday to sunday: Moonwalk (uniting against breast cancer, people walk a marathon or semi-marathon distance during the night - starts at 8pm- more info on the website: http://www.walkthewalk.org/Volunteer/TheMoonWalkEdinburgh ). I volunteered from 1.30 am till 10 am. I was on the road (mile 26, less than a mile from the finishing line) guiding and encouraging the walkers. What an incredible experience. It was really great. I "worked" with 2 great girls (Nikki and Samantha) and we had quite a few laughs out there. But most of all I enjoyed encouraging the walkers and they were so thankful that we were there to accompany them.   It's amazing how thankful and cheerful they were even after such an effort. This experience won't be the last for me. I am definitely going for more volunteering opportunities - and I will probably do the Moonwalk as a walker next year.

* Slenter langs de Portobello promenade op zondag namiddag. Ik heb de Moonwalk verlaten rond 10u30. Ik ben naar huis gegaan, een douche gepakt, iets gegeten en dan heb ik de bus genomen richting Portobello om de mensen van de Dutch meetup te ontmoeten. Het was super koud en windering - we zijn dan een koffie gaan drinken en hebben lekker gebabbeld (in het nederlands). Ik ben naar huis gegaan rond 6pm. Ik voelde me moe en dacht dat ik ziek aan het worden was (hopelijk ben ik niet ziek geworden). Ik ben dan rustig thuis gebleven en vroeg naar bed gegaan (voor middernacht).

Wie zegt dat het altijd slecht weer is in Schotland!!!!
Verleden week was het weer absoluut fantastisch - zonnig en tussen 20 en 27°c.
Ik heb er maximaal van genoten; ik was elke dag op stap. Spijtig genoeg dacht ik niet altijd om mijn fototoestel mee te nemen. Ik heb toch wat enkele beelden opgenomen:

Spijtig genoeg is de zon nu al vrij ver; het heeft de laatste 2 dagen enkel maar geregend.  Het Meadow park was minder bevolkt dan dit weekend: enkel de meeuwen durven op het gras te stappen ...

J'ai profité du mauvais temps pour décorer ma chambre. 
Voici 2 canevas que j'ai peints et décorés de "roses" faites de papier pour la tige et les feuilles et de coton pour le bouton de rose. J'ai encré aux couleurs de mon choix.

I still don't have a job yet but I sent a few applications - I also proposed my services for 2 voluntary jobs -  so I cross my fingers and wait and see... 
On saturday 9th June and sunday 10th June, there will be the Moonwalk Edinburgh 2012.  
What is this ?

It is a charity action walk during the night (you can chose for a marathon or semi-marathon distance) with the purpose of raising money and awareness for breast cancer. You can find more info on the official website: http://www.walkthewalk.org/Challenges/TheMoonWalkEdinburgh

I am not going to join the walkers (even if I love walking) but I will be there as volunteer "Marshall" and I will be assisting, guiding and encouraging walkers on the route from 1.35 am till the end (+/- 1.30 pm). I'm sure it's gonna be a long and exciting night with a jolly atmosphere. I really look forward to it. I'll tell you all about it in a next post (the outfit is also worth a look - so I'll make sure to get pictures of me posted  :-)

Une petite pensée pour mes neveux et nièces qui sont fans de Disney: des bulles sucrées Cars et Princess --> yum yum (équivalent anglais de miam miam)

En ce moment, je ne regarde plus du tout la télé (vraiment?). Mais je n'ai pas renoncé pour autant à la boîte à images. Au contraire, hi hi hi.  Je suis plus sélective.  Je vais au cinéma et mes colocs m'ont fait découvrir une série complètement déjantée. J'ai envie de partager avec vous mes derniers moments de plaisirs visuels (pas de quoi sortir le carré blanc, je vous rassure!!!).  Avec les colocs on se fait des soirées séries tv et vidéo youtube et on se tape quelques fous rires. 
Voici quelques bons plans: 
- série complètement déjantée:  Curb your enthousiasm (traduit par Larry et son nombril):  série américaine des années 2000-2004. La série ressemble plus à un documentaire de la vie quotidienne de Larry David (personnage candide et un peu névrosé) qu'à une série traditionnelle. Il y a beaucoup d'improvisations et c'est super hilarant.
- vidéos youtube: les sélections pour l'Eurovision 2012 --> à voir absolument: la Russie (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WKNRGc71hjc )
cinéma: le dernier Ken Loach vient de sortir dans les salles: Angel's Share (traduit par la part des anges). Un vrai petit bijou, plein d'humour, de personnages attachants et tourné en Écosse. Mini résumé du film: comment 4 jeunes délinquants (qui se sont rencontrés lors de leur peine de travaux d'intérêts généraux) vont s'inspirer d'une visite dans une distillerie pour sortir de leur condition sociale... à voir absolument (et je ne dis pas ça pour voir des écossais en kilt!!!). Pour l'info, j'ai vu le film en anglais (ou plutôt en écossais de Glasgow) mais j'avoue que certains passages et certaines expressions m'ont échappées. Opération Flat

Na 3 super leuke weken wwoofing keer ik terug naar Edinburgh.
Waarom Edinburgh terwijl ik zoveel van Perthshire houd ? Wel, in deze moeilijke periode op het vlak van werkgelegenheid heb ik meer kans om een job in een grote stad als Edi te vinden...  Ik moet ook rekening houden met het feit dat er heel veel andere expats hier zijn die zoals ik achter werk zoeken. Ik heb er een paar ontmoet die hun land hebben moeten verlaten omdat de toestand zo erg is.

Begin verleden week had ik een afspraak met een career adviser (dienst aangeboden door Jobcentreplus = unemployment benefit bureau) en ik heb daar heel nuttige tips gekregen.


Nous avons exploré quelques pistes après analyse de mon profil (études, carrière, compétences, ce que j'aime, ce que je n'aime pas, ce qui est important pour moi...) ... à suivre


Cette semaine mon objectif était de trouver un logement. J'avais réservé un lit dans une auberge jusque dimanche et je tenais absolument à avoir un logement pour la fin de la semaine. ... Objectif atteint!  J'ai emménagé dimanche et passé ma première nuit dans mon nouveau chez moi.

This was my absolute priority.  During the past two months I had no fix place and had to carry one of the 2 luggages I brought from Belgium from place to place.  I realised how important it is for me to have a place where I can put my bags, install my craft stuff...   So what is my new home like ?
A huge flat: big living room with large windows, big kitchen, separate dining area, 2 bathrooms and 5 bedrooms. The flat is located in a nice area of Edinburgh behind the Meadows park.
I have 3 easy going flatmates.

L'immeuble où je vis

Ma chambre

Deze week zal ik een beetje knutselen om mijn kamer te "personaliseren" en ik zal ook actief naar werk beginnen te zoeken.  Ik ben zaterdag naar een meetup met scrapbookers geweest (gevonden via meetup). Het is een groep vrouwen die zoals ik een passie hebben voor knutselen met papier; ze organiseren één keer per maand een sessie (in een kerk!) om de hele namiddag samen te knutselen. Er wordt er natuurlijk ook heel veel gebabbeld (vrouwen samen hé :-)).  Het was super leuk en ik zie ernaar uit om de volgende sessie bij te wonen.

Since I'm in Scotland I have not craft as much as I wish I had.  Yet I made a few cards that some of you received for their birthday...

Pour l'info: j'ai réalisé cette carte pour remercier mes hôtes wwoofer.  Un petit clin d'oeil pour faire référence à leur métier d'horticulteur. J'y ai également associé la technique de découpage pour faire les feuilles --> vive le cutter de précision :-)

Un petit bouquet d'oeillets réalisé avec du papier de soie. que j'ai offert à Granny pour décorer son salon.

Wwoofing - part 2

ça y est je viens de terminer ma dernière journée de travail en tant que wwoofer. 
Ce soir je passe ma dernière soirée avec Margaret et Andrew. 
Quelle superbe expérience! J'ai adoré travailler en plein air (malgré le climat changeant écossais : pluie-soleil-neige-grêle-vent...). 

A special thank you to Margaret & Andrew.  I spent the last 17 days with them and I really enjoyed it.
I learned a lot on plants, trees and gardening. But most of all I enjoyed the talkings.

   - Margaret grows, propagates and sells unusual and useful varieties of plants. 
   - Andrew plants, buds, grafts and grows fruit trees. 
They also both run workshops, share their expertise and much more

Tijdens mijn vrije tijd ben ik naar Cramond geweest.  Cramond is een klein dorp aan de nord west kust van Edinburgh

Ik ben ook regelmatig naar Perth geweest. Perth ligt in centraal-Schotland en is de hoofdstad van Perthshire ( mijn favoriete streek in Schotland)

Verleden zondag ben ik een bezoekje gaan brengen aan de Scone Palace.  Scone is enkele miles gelegen van Perth  en is wel gekend voor the Stone of Destiny - Ik laat je zelf gaan opzoeken waarvoor de steen (stone) werd gebruikt - ik geef jullie een tip: het heeft iets te maken met kroningsceremonie...

Je vais passer le week-end chez Granny et lundi je repars pour Edimbourg pour une seconde tentative de recherche de job et de flat.  J'avoue que je quitte la région du Perthshire avec regret mais je crois qu'il sera plus facile de trouver un boulot à Edimbourg. Et surtout plus facile pour développer des contacts. Je suis déjà inscrite à deux groupes sociaux (groupe de randonnée et groupe de discussion en français).

C'est +/- l'équivalent d'un n° de sécurité sociale (déduction/paiement des taxes + accès aux soins de santé).
Comment l'obtenir ?
- Si vous avez déjà un emploi, votre employeur effectue les démarches
- Si vous n'avez pas encore d'emploi, vous devez prendre rendez-vous avec le Job Centre Office le plus proche. Lors de l'entretien, toute une série de questions vous sont posées (depuis quand êtes-vous dans le pays, où résidez-vous, pourquoi souhaitez-vous un NIN° ...?) et votre identité contrôlée (contact avec un servioce spécial pour vérifier l'authenticité de votre passeport...). Les documents complétés par le Job Centre Plus Officer sont ensuite envoyés au bureau central. La décision (obtention ou non d'un NIN°) sera communiquée par courrier dans les 3 semaines --> j'attends la décision.

Le principe: en échange de quelques heures de travail par jour, on est logé et nourri.
Sur le site destiné au Wwoofing en Grande-Bretagne, j'ai sélectionné en fonction du type de région (Perthshire que j'adore) et le type de travail (plantes et verger) --> je suis tombée sur Margaret et Andrew qui cultivent des plantes comestibles et à usages médicinales et cultivent/vendent des pommiers.  Mon travail de la semaine consistait principalement à retirer les mauvaises herbes, rempoter, attacher les pousses de pommier...  Vendredi, après 4h de "weeding" (enlever les mauvaises herbes) j'avoue que je commençais à sentir le mouvement répétitif dans l'avant-bras.
Je ne travaillais jamais plus de 4 heures par jour et en fonction du temps, je commençais à 8h ou 9h. On prenait un lunch vers 13-14h et ensuite j'étais libre le reste de la journée. Le soir on mangeait ensemble, on allait au pub..; J'ai beaucoup de chance avec Margaret et Andrew. Ils sont super accueillants (j'ai dormi dans leur cottage et partagé tous les repas avec eux). Samedi et dimanche = congé. Samedi j'ai accompagné Margaret à Edimbourg où elle organisait une marche à Blackford Hill. J'ai appris plein de choses (reconnaîtres les plantes comestibles ou non dans la nature; ce qu'on peut en faire...) et j'ai rencontré des gens sympas. Le soir nous sommes allés au pub local (Bankfoot Inn) et avons assisté à un concert de jazz/blues/rock. J'ai fait la connaissance de quelques habitants du coin.  Une très chouette soirée. Une très chouette semaine.

Je suis arrivée à Edimbourg un matin ensoleillé d’avril (02-04-12). Quel beau début n’est-ce pas ?

J’ai pris le train pour Airdrie et tante Jackie est venue me chercher à la gare. Entre-temps le soleil avait fait place à la pluie (pour ne pas dire la drache).

J’ai passé 2 jours chez  Granny(1) ( Chapelhall , petit village dans la région nord de Lanarkshire).  J’ai été accueillie chaleureusement par granny et tante Jackie.  It really feels like home.

(1)    Granny=grand-mère. Il s’agit de ma grand-mère d’adoption; lorsque j’avais 4 ans, mes parents ont divorcé et papa a épousé une Écossaise (=Mum2).

Ik heb dan 5 dagen in Pitlochry doorgebracht om van de verbluffende landschappen en magische sfeer te mogen genieten. Ik heb voor een paar jobs gesolliciteerd – zonder succes (gids bij Blair Atholl / receptionist in een hotel / bediende in een tea room):  ofwel hadden ze niemand nodig ofwel was het net te vroeg (toeristisch seizoen pas begonnen).

Ik heb in een jeugdherberg gelogeerd (waar ik eerder al gelogeerd heb) en ik  raad ze  100% aan : het personeel  (Jack en Ryan) is super aangenaam en always ready for a good chat, de sfeer heel leuk en alles is er  super clean.  Meer info op http://pitlochrybackpackershotel.com/ (kan geboekt worden via hostelworld)

I went then to Edinburgh where I stayed an entire week.  I had 2 appointments with recruitment agencies. They were both interested in my languages as they were looking for people to work in call centres.  I told them I wasn’t looking for that kind of job right now but I might consider it later (just for the record: salary proposed for call centre advisor with more than one language = less than 1000£/month which is pretty much what I earned in a call centre 14 years ago in Belgium!).

I also gave my CV to a few shops on the Royal Mile à still waiting for an answer.

I registered on both Edinburgh council and university websites and applied for a few roles. Unfortunately they don’t accept free applications (you need to apply for a job available on the website) à still waiting

It seems that the job process takes some time.  Most of the job applications have a start date (when the role is open) and end date (when it’s no longer possible to apply for). After the end date, there could be several weeks before receiving a response (in case you have been selected) and only then starts the interview process à it can take some time as well…

In the meantime I had registered to a few Meetups in Edinburgh (= different gathering groups in a city with a subject in common).  I joined the Edinburgh Walking and Travel Group and the Meetup Edimbourg français.  The meetup Edinburgh Walking and Travel Group had organized a walk on sunday  morning where I met a few nice people. It’s a really great way to meet new people. I truly recommend joining one of these meetups to socialize with people with the same interests.

Puisque je n’ai trouvé ni flat ni job, j’ai décidé de retourner une semaine chez Granny.

Quel est le planning de la semaine :

Passer du temps avec  la famille, me balader,  lire (thanks granny for the great detective books) et écrire (le blog etc … (et oui Fay je pense à tes 240 pages… J) et surtout BRICOLER (j’ai fait des cartes car il y a quelques anniversaires qui arrivent bientôt - je les publierai au fur et à mesure que je les envoie à leurs destinataires J). Je suis tellement contente d’avoir consacré la moitié de mes bagages à mon matériel de bricolage.

Speaking of crafts: I will attend the Sincerely Yours Paper craft show on April 21st in Edinburgh.

I really look forward to it. I wonder how those kinds of fairs look like over here ?  I know they love crafts in general, so I’m sure it’ll be great.

My plans for the coming weeks:

Appointment with Job Centre on 21-04 to get a national insurance nr (necessary when you work in order to pay taxes)

Work in an orchard for 2 weeks:  I registered myself on Wwoof UK and I will be helping in an orchard in Bankfoot (near Perth) from April 22^nd till…  More info in the next posts

What about the weather?

The weather was pretty much the same during the 2 weeks:  CHANGING =  cloudy /rainy/sunny/snowy
